PARLIAMENTARY QUESTIONS BY MARK OATEN REGARDING PARTNERSHIP FOR PEACE

House of Commons Hansard - 8 June 2000

I have been in correspondence with Mark Oaten MP, Liberal Democrat spokesman on Foreign Affairs in the House of Commons. This has been in relation to UK - Croatia co-operation in the Partnership for Peace programme. I consider that British-Croatian military co-operation could be an excellent way of forging ties between the two countries.

Mark Oaten very kindly tabled two written Parliamentary Questions (PQ's) on the matter. PQ's are a way for MP's to obtain information from government departments. Of course, they can also serve to highlight to ministers what issues MP's (and thus the public) may consider important. The questions and answers also end up on the public record.

The questions concerned the last time Ministry of Defence officials met with their Croatian counterparts and British participation in PfP with Croatia. The answers had a positive tone, with the UK being pleased to support Croatian entry into PfP, indeed saying that Croatia will be an effective contributor to PfP.
